Land Sale and Planning Approvals Advance Base Redevelopment
Building on the transportation, legislative and environmental milestones completed in 2025, redevelopment of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station continued to advance during the first half of 2026. The Southfield Redevelopment Authority approved several measures related to the regulatory framework, subdivision planning and roadway infrastructure for the Base.
In March 2026, the Southfield Redevelopment Authority approved amendments to its Subdivision, Wetland and Administrative Regulations as they relate to the redevelopment of the Base. These amendments provide an updated regulatory framework for the planning and review of future development activity.
On June 30, 2026, redevelopment plans took a major step forward with the $65 million sale of land at the Base by Washington Capital Management to a joint venture of New England Development and BGRE (formerly Brookfield Properties.) The transaction supports plans for a mixed-use redevelopment spanning more than 1,400 acres across Weymouth, Rockland and Abington, including 6,500 housing units and approximately two million square feet of commercial and retail space. Additional information about the land sale and the broader redevelopment plans is available in the press release attached below.
Further progress followed in July, when the Southfield Redevelopment Authority approved a Definitive Subdivision “Zoning Freeze” Plan. The Authority also approved a Definitive Subdivision Plan and an associated Wetlands Notice of Intent for a Phase I Roadway, which will enable the creation of up to 10 development parcels.
Together, these milestones provide the regulatory, planning and infrastructure foundation needed to support the next phase of redevelopment at the Base.
